How Does IVA Help & Advice Work?

At Advice Centre Group, we offer free impartial guidance on your circumstances. Our job is simple, to help you find a solution that’s practical and affordable to your circumstances.

If you are struggling each month to find ways to pay your normal monthly bills, and then having to find the money to pay debt, why not look at applying for an IVA that not only takes into account your income and expenditure, but works with you to find a payment that is comfortable and affordable. Whether you have missed payments or believe you are about to get to that point, then an IVA can help.

An IVA (INDIVIDUAL VOLUNTARY ARRANGEMENT) can help you to not only become debt-free but to have a fresh start where your money is YOUR money, and not just going on bills and debt. If you need further information, check out the pros and cons of an IVA.

Our team is waiting to speak to you, don’t hesitate to apply for an IVA online with us, or fill in the form and we will contact you within 5 minutes (unless it’s during the night, we all have to sleep!)

Knowing how much an Iva leaves you to live on is based on your income and expenditure.

Utilising the SFS guidelines at Advice Centre Group we will work with you to find out the best possilble amount you have to pay towards your IVA.

Your (D.I) Disposable Income is based on what you have left after your normal bills and also household essentials.

It is worked out after you have paid

Rent

Utility Bills

Communications and Leisure – I.e. Phone, Internet, Sports and hobbies, contingency etc

Travel Costs – Public Transport, Insurance, Tax, Petrol, Car HP Etc

FOOD – This is based on the number of people in your household

Hair, Dentist, opticians etc

This means your payment to your IVA is affordable after EVERYTHING else has been paid

An IVA can help by:

  • Combining your debts into one affordable monthly payment.

  • Freezing interest and charges once agreed.

  • Writing off any remaining unsecured debt at the end of the term (if payments are maintained).

For many people struggling with debt, an IVA can be a very worthwhile solution. It allows you to:

  • Combine all your unsecured debts into one affordable monthly payment.

  • Freeze interest and charges once the plan is in place.

  • Protect yourself legally from creditor contact and further action.

  • Write off any remaining unaffordable debt at the end of the arrangement.

An IVA gives you a clear end date and the reassurance of knowing exactly when you’ll be debt-free, provided you keep up with payments. Many people see it as a positive step towards regaining control and achieving a fresh start.

That said, an IVA does affect your credit rating for six years, and you’ll need to commit to making regular monthly contributions. If you’re a homeowner, you may also be asked to look at equity release in the final year.

Overall, if you have multiple debts and a steady income, an IVA is often worth considering as a structured, legally protected way to become debt-free. Free and impartial advice is always recommended so you can be sure it’s the right choice for your situation

Eligibility depends on your circumstances. Typically, IVAs are more suitable if you:

  • Owe over £6,000 in unsecured debts.

  • Have two or more different creditors.

  • Have a regular income and can make monthly payments.

Most unsecured debts can be included, such as credit cards, loans, store cards, and overdrafts. Some debts cannot be included, such as court fines, student loans, and child maintenance.

Yes. Once the IVA is approved, your creditors are legally bound by the arrangement. Collection calls and legal action must stop, provided you keep up with the payments.

Missing payments can put the IVA at risk of failing. If you’re struggling, it’s important to speak to your Insolvency Practitioner immediately, as they may be able to adjust your plan.

Yes. An IVA will remain on your credit file for six years from the date it starts. This may affect your ability to obtain credit during and shortly after the IVA.

In many cases, an IVA may allow you to stay in your home. If you own a property, you might be asked to release equity in the final year, but this is subject to affordability and lender availability.

Once you make all agreed payments, any remaining unsecured debt included in the IVA is written off, and you will be issued a completion certificate.
